Changi Airport Terminal 5 is one of Asia’s most ambitious aviation infrastructure developments and a cornerstone of Singapore’s long-term air hub expansion strategy. Scheduled for completion in the mid-2030s, this mega-terminal sets new global benchmarks for structural resilience and operational safety. As a strategic structural steel partner for global mega-infrastructure, CUMIC supplied high-performance S355JR Jumbo sections to anchor the terminal’s critical underground foundation systems.
Terminal 5 features a sophisticated architectural layout, large-span functional spaces, and multi-level underground systems. This complexity required structural solutions capable of handling:
Substantial vertical loads from the massive superstructure.
Intense lateral earth pressure generated by deep-stage excavation.
Hydrostatic groundwater forces unique to the coastal site.
Stringent deformation tolerances required for long-term structural health.
At this scale, standard S355 H-beams reached their limit. The project required jumbo sections with exceptional axial capacity and stiffness, while allowing engineers greater flexibility in load distribution and structural layout optimization.
Jumbo H-beams are ultra-heavy, hot-rolled profiles engineered to sustain immense vertical loads and provide the critical structural integrity required for skyscrapers, long-span bridges, and mega-terminal projects. The selection of the 1016 × 406 × 883 kg/m series provided a decisive performance leap over standard S355 sections:
Enhanced Load Capacity: Delivering 4–10 times the strength of standard S355 H-beams, CUMIC sections allow for a radical reduction in member density, significantly optimizing the foundation footprint and total steel tonnage.
Manufacturing Efficiency:As monolithic hot-rolled profiles, these sections eliminate the extensive longitudinal welding required for built-up members. This mitigates the risk of thermal distortion and significantly reduces fabrication labor costs.
Optimized Z-Direction Performance: Our optimized metallurgy is specifically designed to prevent lamellar tearing in ultra-thick flanges (>40 mm). This ensures 100% NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) compliance and prevents structural failure in highly restrained joints.
Structural Stability: The 1,016 mm web height maximizes bending stiffness and buckling resistance, simplifying on-site assembly and securing the project's critical path.
As a global integrated steel solutions provider, CUMIC specializes in empowering the world’s most complex infrastructure and mega-projects.
