As global expedition cruising continues evolving toward greener and more technologically advanced vessels, reliable steel supply remains fundamental to transforming ambitious ship designs into reality.
CUMIC is proud to have contributed to the construction of the Magellan Discoverer by supplying a total of 1,413 tons of Lloyd’s Register-certified shipbuilding steel plates, including 958 tons of LR Grade A and 455 tons of LR AH36. The project demonstrates CUMIC’s capability to provide multiple marine steel grades within a single high-specification vessel project, supporting different structural and performance requirements across the ship’s construction.
Marking the float-out on October 24, 2025 Magellan Discoverer is set to embark on voyages in the 2026-27 Antarctic season. Operating in Antarctic waters requires vessels to withstand extreme cold, icy seas, strong winds, and continuous operational stress. Such conditions place strict demands on shipbuilding materials, particularly in terms of toughness, weldability, structural reliability, and classification compliance.
1. Low-temperature structural performance
Polar navigation requires materials capable of maintaining stable mechanical properties under extremely cold conditions.
Material Consideration:
LR AH36 shipbuilding steel provides excellent low-temperature toughness and reliable structural performance for polar marine applications.
2. High requirements for vessel stability and efficiency
The vessel’s hybrid propulsion system and expedition-focused design require optimized structural performance while supporting operational efficiency.
Material Consideration:
High-strength shipbuilding steel supports lightweight yet durable vessel structures, helping improve fabrication efficiency and operational reliability.
3. Fabrication efficiency for complex vessel structures
Modern expedition vessels feature compact layouts and complex structural sections requiring precise fabrication and welding performance.
Material Consideration:
Shipbuilding plates provide good weldability and processing performance, supporting efficient fabrication and structural consistency.

CUMIC provides high-performance steel solutions for the world’s most demanding shipbuilding and offshore projects, supporting applications such as icebreakers, FPSOs, AHTS vessels, jack-up rigs, tugboats, fishing vessels, and mooring systems. Our shipbuilding plates and structural steel are multi-certified in line with IACS standards, ensuring full compliance with international regulations and reliable performance in harsh marine environments, including extreme temperatures, high-pressure offshore conditions, and long-term corrosion exposure.
