The Polavaram Hydro Electric Project is a major hydropower development located on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh, India. As one of the country’s most significant multipurpose water infrastructure initiatives, the project is designed to support renewable energy generation, regional irrigation, flood control, and long-term water resource management.
For the manufacturing of turbine equipment used in the project, CUMIC supplied over 400 tons of E250-BR hot-rolled plates, which were used in the fabrication of structural and mechanical turbine components.
With a planned installed capacity of 960 MW, the hydropower facility will operate multiple turbine units integrated into the dam structure. Involving complex hydraulic systems and long service life expectations, the project places high demands on the reliability of materials used in turbine manufacturing.
1. High mechanical demands in hydropower turbines
Hydropower turbines operate under continuous hydraulic pressure and heavy mechanical loads, requiring structural materials with stable strength and durability.
Material Consideration:
It provides the strength and fabrication stability required for heavy engineering equipment. Their balanced mechanical properties and good weldability allow manufacturers to produce large turbine components with consistent structural performance.
2. Precision fabrication for large turbine assemblies
Turbine assemblies involve large welded structures and precision fabrication processes, where material consistency is essential for manufacturing quality.
Material Consideration:
The E250-BR structural grade is widely used in heavy engineering applications due to its dependable mechanical characteristics and compatibility with large-scale welded fabrication.
3. Supply coordination for large infrastructure manufacturing
Reliable coordination across sourcing, quality control, and logistics is essential to ensure materials arrive in line with manufacturing timelines.
Through integrated services including mill coordination, quality verification, and international logistics management, the material supply supported the fabrication schedule of hydropower equipment associated with the project.

Our high-performance steel solutions span the full energy spectrum. From the reliability of oil and gas infrastructure to the advancing frontier of solar, wind, hydropower, and carbon capture and storage (CCS), CUMIC helps bridge today’s energy systems with tomorrow’s low-carbon future.
