Location: Indonesia
We are proud to share our contribution to the construction of the SEA DRAGON 01/02/03 tugboats in Indonesia, a multi-vessel shipbuilding project supporting the country’s expanding marine logistics, offshore operations, and oil & gas transportation sector. As maritime activity continues to grow across Southeast Asia, tugboats play a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient port handling, coastal towing, and offshore support.
In this project, CUMIC supplied 480 tons of SS400 angle steel, which was used in the fabrication of essential structural components across all three vessels. These materials support a wide range of applications, including hull internal frameworks, deck reinforcement systems, and load-bearing structures, all designed to ensure durability and stability in demanding marine environments.
Designed for operation in coastal waters, offshore oil & gas fields, and port terminals, the SEA DRAGON tugboats are built to withstand continuous mechanical stress, seawater corrosion, and intensive towing operations. Such conditions place high demands on the performance, consistency, and reliability of structural steel used in shipbuilding.
1. Structural durability under marine operating conditions
Exposed to continuous seawater corrosion and dynamic loads from towing operations, requiring materials that ensure long-term structural reliability.
Material Consideration:
Provides stable mechanical performance and excellent weldability, enabling the construction of robust structural frameworks capable of maintaining integrity under repeated operational stress.
2. Efficient fabrication for compact vessel structures
Compared to large vessels, tugboats have more compact layouts, requiring precise fabrication and flexible structural components to fit confined spaces.
Material Consideration:
Angle steel is widely used in shipbuilding for internal frameworks due to its versatility and ease of processing. Its adaptability supports efficient fabrication and installation across various structural sections.
Maintaining consistency in material quality and delivery timing is critical to ensure smooth production across all units.
Material Consideration:
Uniform material properties and reliable supply coordination including global sourcing, strict quality control, and coordinated logistics help project owners maintain construction efficiency and avoid disruptions in production schedules.

CUMIC provides high-performance steel solutions for the world’s most demanding shipbuilding and offshore projects, supporting applications such as icebreakers, FPSOs, AHTS vessels, jack-up rigs, tugboats, fishing vessels, and mooring systems. Our shipbuilding plates and structural steel are multi-certified in line with IACS standards, ensuring full compliance with international regulations and reliable performance in harsh marine environments, including extreme temperatures, high-pressure offshore conditions, and long-term corrosion exposure.
